Service, advocacy, inclusion, family, and community are what The Arc is about.
The Arc of East Central Iowa is a non-profit agency offering multiple programs and services in six counties in Iowa. We deliver high-quality programs that produce results. More importantly, we improve the quality of life for individuals and families affected by epilepsy, autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, ADHD, and brain injury.
We believe in building better lives for people with disabilities and their families. Our goals are to:
- Provide services and supports that reduce barriers
- Offer resources and referrals
- Promote access to inclusive, community-based life
We are dedicated to making sure the services we provide meet the needs of those we serve today and look ahead to anticipate future needs.

History of The Arc
Since our inception, we have worked closely with families in the community. The Arc of East Central Iowa started in 1953 when families came together to gain services for their children who were affected by what they called “mental retardation” and is now referred to as intellectual and related disabilities.
The Arc of East Central Iowa founders began by canvassing neighborhoods to learn how to address the needs and concerns of people with disabilities. Now, more than half a century later, we offer a variety of programs and services that help enhance the lives of people with intellectual and related disabilities.
