BASICS Winter 2006

More than 50 years ago The Arc of East Central Iowa founders began canvassing neighborhoods to address the needs and concerns of people with disabilities. Now, more than half a decade later, we offer a variety of programs and services that help enhance the lives of people with developmental disabilities and mental retardation.

If you are interested in applying for services from The Arc of East Central Iowa, you may fill out and submit the Referral Form. Read below for more infomation about our services.

It can be difficult for famlies to find an experienced caretaker for someone with special needs. Respite is the supervised temporary care of a child or adult with developmental disabilities. Respite service may not be provided as daycare during times when the usual caregiver is working. Because family needs differ, a variety of Respite services are available. If you would like to talk to someone about Respite care or to schedule a Respite, contact Respite Scheduling at (319) 365-0487 x1031.

In this program, the individual consumer and family are part of a team that designs a skill-training program. The supports of this program foster as much choice and desicion making as possible in order to become more independent in his or her home and community. Skill training includes areas of daily living activities such as table setting, groccery shopping, and more. For more information about SCL services contact The Arc at (319) 365-0487.

Individuals who cannot perform basic self-care skills at home can access Consumer Directed Attendant Care. Trained staff assists consumers with tasks that would otherwise be done independently. Assistance includes tasks such as dressing, bathing supports, meal preparation, eating, transportation, and others. For more information about CDAC services contact The Arc at (319) 365-0487.

Before/After School Inclusive Childcare Services (BASICS) is a service provided for children with and without disabilities. BASICS is designed to serve elementary age children (K-5). The program focuses on skill development like sharing, appropriate social skills, personal hygiene, and incorporates learning through field trips, crafts, and developmental activities.

Opportunities, Activities, Support, and Inclusive Services (OASIS) is designed to provide middle and high school age children enriching activities within a structured setting. The program addresses support needs for teenagers who have developmental disabilities. Inclusion is promoted by inviting typical peers to visit as well as participate in community outings.

Choosing Options for Inclusion and Community Experiences is an adult enrichment program designed to provide social opportunities for consumers in a Group Respite setting.

At Summer Day Program, a child between the ages of 7 and 21 with substantial care and medical needs has the opportunity to experience new activities, make friends, and build self-esteem in a safe environment.
